What Are Function Blocks?

As you explore our website, you’ll notice different products like Left Turn, Right Turn, Start, End, and Extender blocks. What do they all mean? In this blog, with a little help from our friend Bethany, we'll explain everything you need to know to create the garden of your dreams.

Function pieces are available for all of our models and colors of landscape edging, including Bricks, Blocks, and Block XL. For this example, we’ll use our 6.5” Block style edging.

Start & End Blocks

These pieces are perfect for projects that don’t loop or connect back to themselves. Both Start and End blocks have a finished side for a clean, polished look. A Start Block has a protruding piece called a "male end," while the End Block has a connecting hole, also known as the "female end."

Left & Right Turn Blocks

For projects that include 90-degree angles, you’ll need Left and Right Turn blocks. These blocks have a female end on the side instead of the back. The Left Turn Block connects to a male end and turns counterclockwise. The Right Turn Block works the same way but turns clockwise.

Extender Blocks

If your project needs extra length that doesn’t fit our standard 4-foot sections, use Extender Blocks. These are 7 inches long and have a male end on one side and a female end on the other. You can connect multiple extender blocks to create custom lengths.

Pro Tip: Install your edging in one direction! Starting from both ends and meeting in the middle can cause confusion. Installing in one direction helps the process go smoothly and reduces mistakes.
We hope this guide helps you better understand how our function blocks work to make your landscaping projects easier. If you have any questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team. We’re here to help every step of the way.
