Read on to hear us break down the process for you.

In simplest terms, here are all the tools you will need and how to easily measure!

Tools:

  • Measuring tape
  • String
  • Anchoring spikes
  • Paint spray
  • Gloves
  • Paper
  • Pen

Also, as a friendly side note, these items are not required but what worked for our team measuring around the she-shed.

Step 1

Make measurements

With the measuring tape in hand, measure the distance from the she-shed to the desired length of space (or the item that the blocks will be closest to) and place your anchoring spike in the ground.

Ours measured about 2ft, so if this is the length you prefer, you can keep measuring the space out sporadically around the perimeter of the shed.

Once you’re finished, you will want to tie a knot on the anchoring spike that you started with and make it taught. This is important for accurate measurements.

Continue to lace the string through the spikes and tie it at the end.

Step 2

Gather your measurements

Once you have created your imaginary garden bed with your string, you can then map out your measurements on a pad of paper with your pen. Do this as you go so that you can keep track of your measurements.

Our experts recommend using string or rope to map out the lengths and design if you want to create curve designs.

Once you have it laid out, you can then remove the string, make it taught, and measure it.

Keep in mind that since it was initially curved before measuring, the measurements will be more approximate than accurate.

Step 3

Determine your total lengths

This is where you will get the total number of 4-foot sections and any function blocks needed.

Measurements of blocks reference

  • Beuta block sections are approximately 46.75 inches in length.
  • Functions blocks are approximately 7.25 inches long.
  • Brick sections are approximately 47.25 inches in length.
  • Function bricks 8 inches in length
  • Block XL sections are 46 inches in length.
  • Function blocks XL’s are 7 inches in length.

You might have noticed our emphasis on the word, ‘approximate’ and that is due to the natural design and look of the block, giving them that faux stone edging appearance!

For odd lengths, you will want an extender block which, as the name suggests, will extend your area.

For corners, you will need right and left turn function blocks, and for starting or ending your function blocks for one straight line, you will need a start or end function block.

Math Calculations

  1. Once you plot out function blocks and account for their measurements, subtract function blocks from total lengths
  2. Divide total lengths by 4 feet (48”) to determine the needed sections.

Reminder, each section block is made up of six Beuta blocks!

This may be a lot to process so we highly recommend watching this video as a reference while you make your measurements!
